|Our services have been retained to recruit a MAINTENANCE MANAGER for a small to medium size, growing food processor located on the central coast of California (over 2 hours North of LA, community of over 100,000 with good schools, some of the best weather in the U.S. and an abundance of outdoor recreational options). Our client is a fresh and refrigerated products producer (both foodservice and retail) with state-of-the-art facility employing 200-220 hourly, nonunion personnel and operating 4 days per week.
Position reports to company Owner and leads all maintenance and technical operations of the facility to include staff of 10. Primary purpose is to provide technical and engineering leadership to ensure plant equipment operates efficiently, and meets food / human safety standards. Manages and provides leadership to the maintenance team who will be responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining and improving reliability of plant and facilities equipment. Establish strategies, objectives and goals for the team, improve team performance and achieve key metrics. Manage and further develop the technical skills for direct reports, and support the overall plant performance of the facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Model and enforce all company policies and procedures including but not limited to: labor, safety, food safety, quality, etc. • Provide leadership in the Maintenance Department by implementing and maintaining programs in technical training, safety, quality, communications, performance recognition and internal employee development in order to achieve optimal employee performance. • Develop and maintain a maintenance budget to include cost & control of labor, materials and installation, etc. Control cost and analyze variance between actual/budgeted expenses. • Prepare and control capital expenditures budget. • Aggressively reduce the cost of spending through the utilization of alternative / non-tradition sources, improving preventative maintenance program, and identifying root cause for equipment failures and parts wear & tear. • Maintain positive employee relations by fostering a positive work environment designed to motive and improve employee retention. • Ensure quick response time to repair calls and equipment breakdown to minimize mechanical downtime. • Directing and overseeing the Preventative Maintenance program to ensure maximum equipment reliability and attain optimal production efficiencies. • Oversees, coordinates and directs implementation and installation of machines and equipment. • Provides development and mentorship to department technicians. • Direct and oversee the CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) to ensure timely completion of work orders and maintenance labor tracking. • Oversee refrigeration and Cogen (Cogeneration) systems and assist with implementation and maintenance of the Risk Management Program. Oversee regulatory compliance and interface with regulatory compliance agencies. • Actively participate in all SQF initiatives to support quality department in audits and resolution of any required corrective actions. • Help promote employee safety and food safety awareness and compliance. • Maintain awareness of relevant industry and regulatory trends and keep abreast of industry standards • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree preferred (in mechanical, electrical or related technical field) but equivalent combination of education and work experience considered • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in all phases of maintenance, and repair to include: mechanical, pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical, PLCs, facilities maintenance, wastewater treatment, and refrigeration & Cogen systems. • 5+ plus years technical experience in the food or similar industry • 5+ years of progressive leadership experience. • Experience with preventative /predictive maintenance. • Experience with continuous improvement /lean manufacturing methodology. • Knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC’s and automation. • Good understanding of food processing, sanitation, and quality systems and the correlation between each. • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, presentation and listening) • Capital Project Management skills • Must be oriented toward continuous improvement • Solid computer skills: Microsoft Office Applications, electronic mail • Experience with CMMS utilization. • Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus • Knowledge of CALOSHA, EPA and FDA regulations
